Westport United v Manulla

The second round of action in the Super League this weekend has thrown up one of the marquee fixtures of the season when Castlebar Celtic and Westport United meet in Celtic Park on Sunday afternoon. United opened their title defence last weekend with a 2-0 win at home to Glenhest Rovers, while Celtic spurned a 3-0 lead away to Iorras Aontaithe to finish up with just one point from their visit to Carne Nash. Celtic manager Ciaran Kelly will be hoping that come the end of the season that result won't be something to come back and bite them.

With Ballina Town in action in the Connacht Junior Cup against Galway Bohs there was only four games down for decision on the opening weekend. Current holders Westport entertained Super League newbies Glenhest Rovers to the Sports Park on Sunday afternoon. In a closely fought affair, goals from David Hoban and Adam Mulchrone got the Covies off to a flying start in a 2-0 win. Ciaran Kelly and his Castlebar Celtic side travelled to North Mayo on Saturday evening and they gained a share of the spoils in a real humdinger. The Mayo Football League believes that a Mayo representative team should play in the SSE Airtricity U17 League by 2017, the U19 League by 2019, and shortly afterwards the Mayo Football League will apply to join the First Division of SSE Airtricity League."

A last minute Dean Roddy penalty was hugely decisive after he had given them a first half lead. Manor Rangers clawed one back, but Claremorris showed great hunger to steal it at the death thanks to the exploits of Roddy who has been in magnificent form this season. Manulla also progressed to the next round after recording a clinical 2-0 win over Brazukas. Goals from Declan Tonra and Rory Martyn were enough for Tom Healy’s men in a super display by the west Mayo men.

Westport United retained the Elverys Sports Super League title on Sunday thanks to a 7-1 win over Conn Rangers at the Sports Park. They had to come from behind as Johnnie Cocozzoa gave the North Mayo side an early lead. Westport Utd under the tutelage of John Brennan this season rallied and pushed 3-1 clear at the break thanks to goals from Mark McNally, Joe Lawless and Pat Fitzgerald. It was more of the same in the second half where they put on a show for the Westport faithful. McNally grabbed another along with goals from Jamie Fallon, Danny Scahill and David Hoban wrapping up a comprehensive win.
